Winthrop tops Lady Camels

BUIES CREEK — Shy Tuelle reached double-figures for the fourth time this season by scoring 12, but the Campbell women’s basketball team dropped a 59-46 decision to Winthrop on Tuesday night.

Winthrop moved to 3-2 in Big South play and 7-9 overall, while the Camels fall to 2-3 in league action and 10-6 overall.

Tuelle made four three-pointers to reach double-digits, while Lauren Carter scored nine and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds; Carter also dished out three assists.

Winthrop’s Kem Nwabudu (18), Angela Coello Perez (15) and Jah’Che Whitfield (11) combined for 45 of the Eagles’ 59 total points. Nwabudu led all players with 11 rebounds, while Miquela Santoro totaled a game-high seven assists.
The Eagles held the advantage in rebounds (41-34), points in the paint (26-18), points off turnovers (15-6) and fast break points (4-0). The Camel bench outscored WU’s 23-3.

Following an Ashlyn Hampton jumper at the 9:18 mark of the second quarter, the Eagles went on a 31-9 run over the next 13:56 of play, eventually earning their largest lead of 27 points (50-23) with 4:38 to go in the third quarter.

Carter laid one in on Campbell’s next possession, which sparked an 11-2 run to close out the third period. Over the final 4:08 of the third period, the Camels went 7-for-8 from the field.

In the fourth quarter, Campbell outscored Winthrop 10-7 but it was not enough as the Eagles went away with the 59-46 final decision.

Up next, the Camels will welcome new Big South member Hampton to Buies Creek for a 2 p.m. tip-off on Saturday. The Pirates are the only unbeaten team in the Big South and will enter Saturday’s contest 4-0 in conference play.
