Lucas Capalbo made two free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining as Cape Fear Christian Academy’s varsity boys basketball team topped visiting Northwood Temple Academy, 64-62, in its Sandhills Athletic Conference opener on Friday night.
Capalbo was knocked to the floor as CFCA sought to inbound in its backcourt.
E.J. Bethea scored 27 points as CFCA improved to 11-3. Northwood (7-6) is coached by James Strong, who coached Bethea at Fayetteville Academy last season. Riley Adams added 14 points as the hosts won all three games. Capalbo finished with eight points.
Mike Okoye had five points before leaving the game with a knee ailment. Ramiro Arrillaga finished with four points. Scoring two points each were Marcus Owens, Parker Watson and Richard Edwards.
CFCA visits Raleigh Homeschool on Tuesday night.
Kristen Bass scores 38 for CFCA girls
The Cape Fear Christian Academy varsity girls basketball team got 38 points from Kristen Bass to turn back Northwood Temple, 62-52, in the CFCA gym on Friday night.
The CFCA girls improved to 6-4 overall and started 1-0 in the Sandhills Athletic Conference as Talisha McNeill added 10 points.
Anslee McLamb had six points for the CFCA girls. Leah Brannon and Aubree Bass had three points each. Jada Horne scored two points.
Woods leads CFCA JV boys
DeShaun Woods scored 31 points and Zeke Brock tallied 23 as Cape Fear Christian Academy’s junior varsity boys basketball team took a 72-67 Sandhills Athletic Conference win over visiting Northwood Temple Academy on Friday night.
The CFCA junior team moved to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Owen Gregory had seven points, Dolan Adams scored five, Jaden Crumley added four and Reid Miller had two.
The CFCA junior varsity boys host Clinton on Monday at 5 p.m.
